Elaine Moss bought a struggling used bookstore and turned it into a community hub with events every week.
We sat down with Elaine Moss, owner of Second Chapter Books in Burlington, Vermont, to talk about how the business started, what sets it apart, and what Elaine has learned along the way.
How did you get started?
I was a regular. When the owner announced he was retiring, I made him an offer before I could talk myself out of it.
What makes your business different?
Every staff member writes handwritten recommendation cards. People come in just to read them.
What was the hardest lesson so far?
Accepting that the business has to change. We added new books, a kids’ corner and author events.
What advice would you give another owner?
Give people a reason to visit that they can’t get online.
What’s next for you?
A small café counter. Our book club has been asking for coffee for two years.
