Leah Martens turned a love of cycling into a repair shop with a waiting list every spring.
We sat down with Leah Martens, owner of Prairie Pedal Bike Shop in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, to talk about how the business started, what sets it apart, and what Leah has learned along the way.
How did you get started?
I fixed bikes for friends out of my garage for years. When the garage couldn’t hold them all, I rented a shop.
What makes your business different?
We teach basic repair classes for free once a month. It brings people in and builds trust.
What was the hardest lesson so far?
The spring rush. Everyone wants their bike tuned the same week in April.
What advice would you give another owner?
Plan for your busiest season months in advance, and offer early-booking discounts.
What’s next for you?
Winter fat-bike rentals, so we’re busy all year instead of just six months.
