Ruth Okafor makes every mug by hand, and her online restocks sell out in hours.
We sat down with Ruth Okafor, owner of Salt & Stone Ceramics in Asheville, North Carolina, to talk about how the business started, what sets it apart, and what Ruth has learned along the way.
How did you get started?
I took a pottery class to relax after work. Two years later I was selling more mugs than I could make.
What makes your business different?
Every piece is made and glazed by hand in small batches, so no two are exactly alike.
What was the hardest lesson so far?
Pricing. I undercharged for years because handmade work felt too personal to put a real price on.
What advice would you give another owner?
Charge for your time, not just your materials. Your customers will value the work more.
What’s next for you?
Opening the studio for weekend classes so more people can learn the craft.
