We sat down with Nico Alvarez, owner of Harbour Tattoo Studio in Vancouver, British Columbia, to talk about how the business started, what sets it apart, and what Nico has learned along the way.
How did you get started?
I apprenticed for three years in Mexico City, then worked in Vancouver studios before opening Harbour with two friends.
What makes your business different?
Every custom piece starts with a free consultation. We sketch together before anyone picks up a needle.
What was the hardest lesson so far?
Booking. We were overbooked for months and people waited too long. Now we use an online booking system.
What advice would you give another owner?
Show your work everywhere. Your portfolio is your best salesperson.
What’s next for you?
Hosting guest artists every month so our clients can try different styles.
