Tom Kowalski says the secret to a five-star renovation business is simple: answer the phone and keep your word.
We sat down with Tom Kowalski, owner of Ridgeline Renovations in Calgary, Alberta, to talk about how the business started, what sets it apart, and what Tom has learned along the way.
How did you get started?
I was a framer for fifteen years before I started taking on small jobs of my own. Word of mouth did the rest.
What makes your business different?
We give every client a written schedule and update it every Friday. People are shocked by how much that matters.
What was the hardest lesson so far?
Underquoting. I lost money on my first three kitchens because I didn’t account for surprises.
What advice would you give another owner?
Build a buffer into every quote, and explain it honestly to the client.
What’s next for you?
Adding a second crew so we can take on basements and kitchens at the same time.
